We received news of seals starting to be washed ashore on the beaches of Northumberland, so were glad we had re-stocked the shelves and checked the kit after the recent release!<\/p>
<\/p>
We were asked if we would be able to accept a seal that had been found alone on a beach, and took Apple in on Friday, naming her with this season\u2019s theme of fruit.<\/p>
<\/p>
She initially had a nearly full covering of soft white fur, but had started to moult this, showing that she was no longer dependent on her mum and would be trying to fend for herself. Grey seals are born with a thick white coat, which means if they are washed into the sea, they get quicky waterlogged and can drown. Once they have to find their own food, this is lost very quickly as we have seen with Apple, who has pretty much lost her fluffy pyjamas in the space of 48 hours!<\/p>
This has also meant our volunteers have been covered in white fur when feeding her, and have spent a lot of time cleaning out the drains as they become clogged :)<\/p>

We have started her on fish soup, but she will be moving on to whole fish soon to get her nice and healthy to go back into the wild.<\/p>
